Compasses
Westernex prides itself on supplying only quality products for the Mining, Geology and Exploration
Industries. Westernex’s range of compasses are of exceptional quality that will meet or exceed your
field expectations and requirements. All with extreme accuracy, ease and speed of operation these
compasses include:
Breithhaupt is a German company that has been producing and developing innovative magnetic
compasses surveying equipment since its foundation in 1762. This equipment is top of the range
stratum compasses and are excellent for geological, geophysical mining tectonic and rock
mechanical applications.
The Cocla is the top of the range stratum compass allowing for azimuth and angle dip measurements
in one single operation. This large circular opening in the compass housing contains the graduated
circle, the magnetic needle with circular magnet and the copper dampening pot. At its base the
housing is closed by a bottom plate of transparent unbreakable plastic allowing for measurements to be
taken and read from above the head.
Brunton, established in 1894 in the USA provides the finest and most respected field instrument for
geologists, surveyors, mining and civil engineers, environmental engineers and foresters worldwide
meets or exceeds your expectations.
Of its many features Brunton Compasses have
• a single NeFeB magnet that resists demagnetisation better than other types of magnets for
increased reliability
• Azimuth accuracy ±1/2° with 1°graduations
• Vertical accuracy ±1/2° with 1°graduations and 10 minute readability
• A percent grade scale with increments of 5%
• Induction damped needle for quick accurate readings
• Sapphire jewel bearing allows for smooth needle
• Magnetic declination adjustment allows for east or west movement declination setting to
180°
• Short and long sights for increased accuracy when sighting azimuth or vertical angles
• Precision aligned mirror with convenient "see through" sighting capability
• Durable aluminium body
• O-rings make the Com-Pro waterproof for increased reliability
• Durable leather carrying case
• One year warranty
The Freiberg range of compasses are a trusted name for geologists. Having a compass circle of
45mm, it has a scale value of 2°, a azimuth circle of 22mm and a clinometer measuring range of
+90°. The Freiberg compass comes either with or without a mirror.
For those individual’s where sighting is a must, the Silva compass is both classic and detailed. It has a
magnifying mirror and sighting hole at the lower edge of the mirror. There is rubber feet on the
baseplate, magnifier and measuring scales in millimetres and inches. The Romer scales are both in
1:50,000 and 1:25,000.
Suunto, a company based in Finland since 1933 compasses are designed to combine accuracy with
ease and speed of operation. Well known in the orienteering and mountaineering sports, Suunto
compasses are equally useful in the exploration and geology fields. The accuracy is 1/3°, graduation
1/2° and the compass weighs only 115g. Water resistant, the flat compact housing of the Silva
compass has no protruding or adjustable parts and are designed to stand up to heavy-duty wear.
The cards of these compasses are immersed in a special dampening fluid that ensures vibrationless,
smooth movement. They are pivoted on polished sapphire tips. The veering assembly is to all intents
and purposes subject to no wear and the liquid remains clear and its viscosity low under all
conditions.
The compasses have been given permanent anti-static treatment. The lens apertures of the Suunto
KB-14 and KB-20 types are restricted horizontally by a column, which automatically centres the eye
on the optical axis, thus eliminating parallax.
There is also a rubber cover accessory for all the Suunto KB-14 versions that is made of a saltwater
and UV-resistant mixture of EPDM and natural rubber.
The Suunto KB20 360R is a hand bearing floating compass that weighs only 40 . Ideal for marine,
professional and outdoor use, this version has an accuracy that is better than 1° , graduation is 1° .
and it has a reverse scale.
